Upper School: Applicants ages 18 through 24 and who hold at least a three-year college degree must complete the Coast Guard Basic Military Academy or a Coast Guard Intermediate School of Performing Arts. If the applicant has a high school diploma or a GED, they can request to submit additional documents if they are required. MMS Class: Applicants ages 25 through 34 who have attained an engineering degree or higher must be sponsored by an MMS Class in order to apply. Applicants who were in the service at least three years, must have completed an MMS course. The applicant will be required to show the completion certificate in the application. MOC Step 1.  Once you obtain an MMC, you will be required to apply for a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) to become eligible to act as an officer on the USGS Merchant Marine. The MMC application process is the same regardless of if you are submitting an MMC or MOC.
